When Northumbrian Water faced a unique combination of outdated equipment, limited site access, and electrical constraints, they turned to Hydromarque to find a modern, space-efficient solution.
Following several successful pump replacements, our team was called in again; this time for a challenging raw sewage pumping station near Durham.
The Challenge
The site housed an ageing Tuke & Bell ejector pump, a unit that had long been obsolete, with no spare parts available and ongoing maintenance issues plaguing performance.
The key hurdles were:
Unknown pump duty: No data on flow rate or discharge pressure
Limited power supply: Only a single-phase 80amp fuse at the site
Restricted access: The station sat in the middle of a farmer’s field, with no permission to excavate, rebuild, or install a new sump
Raw unscreened sewage: Required a pump capable of handling solids without clogging
With submersible pumps off the table, Northumbrian Water needed a self-priming solution that could be installed above ground, without disturbing the existing sump or needing new electrical infrastructure.
The Hydromarque Solution
We conducted a full site survey and proposed a Gorman-Rupp Super T Series™ self-priming pump, fitted with the Eradicator® Solids Management System which is ideal for raw, unscreened sewage and perfect for above-ground installation.

Using a provided plan of the site and rising main, we calculated a reliable estimate of the required flow rate and pressure, allowing the system to be correctly specified from the outset.
Results
The 3” Gorman-Rupp Super T Series pump was installed by Northumbrian Water and commissioned by Hydromarque. It performed exactly as predicted, providing a reliable, low-maintenance alternative to the outdated ejector system, with no structural changes, no excavation, and no disruption to the surrounding land.
