Hydromarque was approached by ERIKS with an on-site issue at Calor Gas involving their effluent pit which was intended to have a dual-pump unit working together as a mainline pump and backup assist pump. However, the effluent pit pump system had been fitted with two problematic and unreliable submersible pumps, thus causing significant problems with the backup of effluent.

Even more of an issue was that the installation led to numerous health and safety issues when it needed maintenance, such as working at height and within confined spaces. The downtime periods caused by effluent backup were costing Calor Gas significantly and a solution was required urgently from Hydromarque.

Solution

After an in-depth inspection at the site, it was decided that the Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming pump would prove to be the best solution. Complete with a new control panel to make management easier, the durable material provides superior performance with a design which allows automatic re-priming in a completely open system and extends pump life six-fold.

Additionally, the Super T Series pumps can handle a maximum temperature of 71°C and flow up to 750m³/hr or 3 bar, meaning it can now handle the heavy-duty processing that the plant needs. Its suction lifts up to 7.3m to make travel easier, and its drain and air bleed valves protect against backup.

After installing the new pumps on the site, Calor Gas were extremely pleased with the outcome and improved plant reliability.
